The Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodations, making it ideal for climbers who prefer not to camp. The trail offers scenic rainforest paths, moorland plateaus, and panoramic crater views — ending with a sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Day 1
Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
    • Distance: ~8 km

    • Time: 4–5 hours

    • Habitat: Rainforest
      After registration at Marangu Gate, begin trekking through lush rainforest filled with wildlife, waterfalls, and colobus monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled in a clearing.

    Meals: Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight: Mandara Hut (shared dormitory hut)

Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
    • Distance: ~12 km

    • Time: 5–7 hours

    • Habitat: Heath/Moorland
      Climb through moorland and grassy slopes with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. Stop for lunch at Maundi Crater viewpoint before continuing to Horombo Hut.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Overnight: Horombo Hut

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
    • Optional Hike: Horombo – Zebra Rocks (4,000m) and back

    • Time: ~2–3 hours
      This extra day helps your body acclimatize to the altitude. After breakfast, hike to the beautiful Zebra Rocks for panoramic views, then return to Horombo to relax and hydrate.

    Overnight: Horombo Hut

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
    • Distance: ~10 km

    • Time: 5–6 hours

    • Habitat: Alpine Desert
      Trek through a surreal alpine desert landscape with little vegetation. This stretch is more gradual but at high altitude. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your base for the summit push. Rest early — the climb begins at midnight.

Summit Day! Kibo – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut
    • Distance: ~20 km

    • Time: 12–15 hours

    • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
      Begin your ascent at midnight, passing Gilman’s Point (5,685m) around sunrise, and continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Celebrate briefly, take photos, then descend to Kibo for brunch, and continue to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Transfer to Moshi
    • Distance: ~20 km

    • Time: 5–7 hours
      Descend through the moorland and lush forest to Marangu Gate. Receive your climbing certificate and meet your driver for transfer back to Moshi.
