The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful and well-balanced route on Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain, it passes through pristine rainforest, expansive moorlands, and dramatic alpine deserts before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point.

Itinerary
Day 1
Lemosho Gate (2,100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)
  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest
    Drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate and begin trekking through lush rainforest filled with birds and monkeys. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for your first night in the wild.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
  • Distance: ~8 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland
    Ascend out of the forest into the heather zone with incredible views across the Shira Plateau. Reach Shira 1 Camp, one of the oldest lava formations on the mountain.

Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,900m)
  • Distance: ~7 km

  • Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland
    Cross the Shira Plateau, enjoying wide-open views and sightings of Mount Meru behind you. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, with panoramic views and a chance to fully acclimatize.

Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Time: 6–8 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
    This is a key acclimatization day. Hike to Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” approach prepares your body for higher altitude.

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
  • Distance: ~5 km

  • Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Start with a climb up the Barranco Wall — a thrilling scramble with rewarding views — and continue over ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. Rest and rehydrate.

Karanga – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
      • Distance: ~4 km

      • Time: 3–4 hours

      • Habitat: Alpine Desert
        Climb steadily toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Arrive early to rest, eat, and prepare for your midnight summit push.

Summit Day! Barafu – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
  • Distance: ~17 km

  • Time: 12–14 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
    Begin your climb at midnight via Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebrating, descend back to Barafu for brunch, then down to Mweka Camp for a well-earned sleep.

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi
  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours
    Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for celebration or rest.
